Mission Statement

Pushing ultra-short pulsed laser material processing into application by combining recent advances in research with the latest technology.

Services

NAPho provides support in the broader area of photonics and especially ultra-short pulsed laser materials processing. This enables defined manufacturing in the micrometer regime of metals plus heat-sensitive materials like cBN, diamonds, and ceramics. The whole range from consultancy to process development covering proof-of-principle, machine tool design with control, and small series is offered. A buyer's guide helps to choose the right components for your project starting from laser source, beam delivery, controllers, electronics, and mechanical with optical axes for custom-tailored laser manufacturing.

NAPho supports public-private partnership projects with extensive experience in the Swiss funding schemes - knowing where to, with the university partner you need, and how to apply with five granted proposals in the last years.

NAPho improves your production with a holistic overview and interdisciplinary know-how using Lean Six Sigma methods reducing costs reaching operational excellence in your production line.

Recent Projects and Services

Innovative concepts and new processes enable a defined laser processing of any material.
Ablation and Feasibility Studies

NAPho is well connected within academia and industry having access to laser sources from femto- to millisecond pulse duration and precision axes. For the characterization optical and electron microscopy with analytical assessments are available. Laser machining on all material classes with sub micrometer precision can be established and characterized.

Laser Machining of Ceramic Materials

For rapid-prototyping ultra-short pulsed laser ablation enables a straightforward path to generate complex geometries with custom-tailored surfaces for functionalization on e.g. alumina-toughened zirconia usable as implants with increased performance.

Laser Conditioning of Grinding Tools

Ultra-short pulsed laser machining produces high-precision tools with set free abrasives like metallic-bonded diamond and borazon. A scan-head free axes configuration enables an industrially transferable manufacturing process. Read more.

Defined Microstructuring

Using ultra-short pulses mitigates heat input to the specimen. This makes micro-structuring smaller than the focal spot size possible with sub micro-meter precision on sensitive materials, which can undergo e.g. phase transformations. Combining micro- and nano-structures functionalizes the surface tailoring the optical, tribological, and wetting towards application.

Laser Marking and Coloration

Marking products by means of laser is broadly used and the generation of defined oxide layers on metals can be used creating vivid color marks e.g. usable in medical applications and jewlery. Ultra-short pulses enable high-contrast marking following the UID mandatory following the MDR.

Combination of Ablation and Cutting

Laser machining with combined ablation and cutting processes point to high precision in little time. This can be used to speed up sample preparation, generate hard mask for clean room processing, produce special micro nozzles and enable micro patterns for droplet condensation.
